Does anyone remember the dog fights over the North Sea when a Spitfire and a Hurricane shot down two German raiders
both British Aircraft were from Usworth Aifield or airodrome near Sundeland, where the Nissan car Plant is now Built.
I would like to know if the Lifeboat was called out to rescue the German Pilots, I beleive it was about 1942.

Does anyone remember the Commercial Hotel, High Street East Sunderland.

My grandfather Benjamin Jackson Hardy ran it until he served in the navy during the war. My grandmother Elizabeth (nee Judson) died there of influenza in 1918 aged 28, leaving 4 children, one of whom was my mother Elizabeth. Would be grateful for any information.

When I found this website I was hooked, I check it out every week and there's always something to stir the memory. But I didn't know about the help that the team behind the scenes are giving to people on a day-to-day basis! This week I saw a picture of a zeppelin on the site and asked about it because my family were bombed out by one in 1916. The full details of the 'family' zeppelin, the German crew and the air raid in question arrived before 24 hours were out !!!. My heartfelt thanks to Dave for taking the trouble and to his friend John for acting so quickly. It is so wonderful to find such spontaneous kindness!

just returning to try and piece together more of my family history of the Early family who lived in Seaham from 1868 to the present day after a 5 year break. Particulary interested in decendants of Patrick Early, believe his children married into several seaham family's mckenna being 1. The name Owen seems to have particular importance in my family going back many generations. Hoping to trace more living decendants. Anyone with any info no matter how small would be appreciated.

Lucy, re Dock Storm photographs, eight months ago Bow sent me a link to an article on the net which almost certainly dates the storm to the night of January 31st 1953.
A short extract from the article below -
On January 31 1953 there was a combination of an intense low pressure heading down the North Sea, hurricane force winds and a high tide. As a result a huge mound of water was pushed south down the North Sea creating a high tide up to 2.5 metres (8ft) above normal.
This storm is described as the worst peacetime disaster that the UK has known. It killed 307 people and 30,000 were evacuated - but that is only part of the story. On the same night 132 people out of 172 passengers and crew died when they abandoned the British Rail ferry, Princess Victoria, in heavy seas, and across the North Sea another 1,835 people were drowned as the dykes gave way.
In that single night in the South and East 24,000 homes were damaged.
The article can be found at - http://www.open2.net/naturalhistory/1953.html
Amazing isn't it, I am forever banging on about people not contributing to the site and when they do I forget about it...Sorry Bow.

Re Storm at Seaham, after 1945, probably 1950s or 60s.I was going down the docks from 1965 to fish and cannot remember this storm so it must have been before 1965.I do remember going down one day (between 1965 and 1972)and the south dock was awash.

Jacqueline, it always amazes me that so few people read the articles under the History section, along with the photographs these give a real insight into life in Seaham 100+ years ago and "Up the Ladder" is probably the best of the lot, a brilliant read.
You can see the Marlborough area where Annie lived on site under Seaham/Various Streets, ST 071,072 and 078

Loved the 'Up the ladder' article - my great aunt came to Dawdon and married in 1918 - had three kids - as much as I can make out. She was widowed quite early and remarried moving to a place called Marlborough Seaham. Know nothing at all about her other than she was called Annie - but I doubt the Annie in the article. The information helped bring it all to life. She would have been about the same age as the lady who wrote the article.

Would love to know if she knew my Annie.

Thank you.

A few weeks ago my wife and I took a trip to Northeast England. After talking to Brain on this site I found information about my family, and he then offered to take me around the area when I came to visit. My wife and I were overwhelmingly gracious at the generosity and knowledge that Brain was able to provide us on our trip. He took us to from the train station to Willington to look at some places were my family lived. Then he set up for two churches to be opened up for viewing for us. Brain then invited us into his home, to relax for a little while. We were extremely gracious to Brain and his wife for opening up their home to us. Brain also provided me with a map of Seaham, along with a CD with various information on BMD’s in the area. Anyone who is going to the Seaham area, I would recommend talking with Brain about the area. He is very helpful and very friendly.

Once again my wife and I would like to thank Brain for his generosity and time while we made our trip. I would be happy to talk with anyone personally about the experiences we had if you want to know anything further.

Thanks, Nick and Stephanie Watson

On putting your query into the forum this is one of the replies

( The info I have is that the road across the dene was built in 1959 and the bridge closed at that point.

I have three dates for demolition of bridge, 1961 (which would appear to be wrong), 1967 and late 60s.)

The George Elmy Lifeboat Restoration
Last week we made good progress with the boat on two fronts.

The team at Seaham removed all rubbish from the deck and also removed the wheelhouse which had been added, the steel rudder along with four bungs and so drained out the water. It is now starting to look like a lifeboat, well done the Seaham team. This work is shown in the photographs.

We also had some good luck in finding a sister lifeboat on the Isle of Skye. after checking with friends on Skye to see if there were any parts we could use on the George Elmy, photographs were sent down to us and we decided that it was worth a trip up there, one to see our friends and two to strip off parts to use in Seaham. Our thanks go to Graham and Margaret and John and Effie Ann without whose help we would not have managed. We did have a good time both at the boat and the pub as can be seen in photographs. THANK YOU SKYE.

In the coming week we have a fundraiser at MITCHELLS at Westlea (Friday 17th July at 8pm, entry £1) and hope for a good turn out. Also we hope to be in Byron Place Shopping Centre on Thursday collecting names for our Petition of Support from the people of Seaham, please help.
