I have a water colour of the row of cottages in your photo number 45. It was painted in or about 1940 by R. Murray, 15 Princess Road, Seaham, Co. Durham. Is he or any of his family still in Seaham?

I remember the wooden bridge, it had planks missing because people used to nick them for their allotments , etc. Sometimes the gaps were so wide it was too dangerous to cross.
Miss McDougal was my my first teacher at Low Colliery School. She moved to High Colliery when Low Colliery closed. Headmistress was Miss Heslop, she was about 6 feet tall.

Have lots of memories as a youngster in Seaham. Can anyone remember the black road from the knack club to the old wooden bridge that crossed the lines at the colliery. I would walk past the old clay pit on the right which was full af water and people would swim. Old chimneys on the knack ground which were blown up in the late 60's or early seventies (Watched it happen).

Can also remember the old field at westlea where the new school was built after closing high colliery - site of a massive "bonny" every guy fawkes night.

Can anybody remember the old models of coal wagons and miners in locked display cabinets in high colliery school dinner hall which was at the bottom of Mr Millar's class. Mr Wilson's class (later headmaster of westlea school) was a class just off the dinner hall - big open fire at the bottom of the dinner hall.

Other teachers were Miss McDougal, Miss Cullerher (Not the right spelling by any stretch of the imagination) , Mrs Hall then Mrs Millar (wife of the above)

I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Brian
Scollen and Alan Brooks of Seaham for all their assistance and courtesy in aiding me to obtain information about my ancestors Thomas Costello and family. This family left Seaham in March 1856 to emigrate to Australia. Here they provided Australia with 11 Children and I am proud to be a descendent. Thomas and his wife Jane left family behind to travel downunder and I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions as to how I may l locate any of the Costello family that remained at Seaham or in the UK. Again my sincere appreciation for your valuable help and I thank you in anticipation for any future assistance you may be able to provide.
Sincerely John Costello

I posted a comment on a photo which is on your facebook page of a group of men women and children 2 of whom are my grandmother (Ada Appleby nee Wright) and one of my auntie as a child asking if anyone has any details about the photo. I have received some information from a cousin who still lives in Seaham & she thinks that her mother (Ada McThune) loaned the original to a David Angus who made some copies and displayed it on his butcher shop wall. Would this be the same Dave Angus who is answering questions on this guestbook and if so can he please provide any more details on the photograph.

Thank you. By the way have found this site very interesting with some mention to a couple of my ancestors and their relatives.

Carol, as your comments were on facebook I replied through Facebook on 21/3/ with the little information I had.
"Carol, I was loaned the group photograph about 20 years ago by a lady whose name I can't remember. The photograph was taken c1925 on the site of the old Kitty (Police Station), Seaham. The lady thought that the little blonde girl was either herself or her sister. At the time of her death I think she lived in Grants Cres, Seaham, her daughter's name is Sandra Gibb, you probably know her"

Jenny, good to hear your memory of the 'squatters'. The council housed us there in '51/'52. My parents were living apart due to lack of space. My brother and dad were with dad's parents in Parkside and I was with mam in Seaton at my nana's. I remember two families living around us, Davis or Davidson and Guy. I don't remember much as I was only a baby, but my older brother remembers that the only streetlight to the entrance of the camp was a bare light bulb hanging from a telegraph pole! Indeed, happy days.

Lynda, my mam and dad, Edie and Dave Clarke, now sadly passed on lived in the squatters in the late forties before they too were rehoused in a prefab in Hall Street.
It seems my dad finished his shift at the knack pit and my mam, after hearing about squatter's rights, was waiting for my dad at my nana's house in Post Office Street with a chair and a blanket so that he could camp in a hut and claim squatter's rights. It seems they weren't up to much at first until the council put windows in and then charged rent. Happy days!

2 /February /2012----01 :11 :13 - Roscommon, Michigan USA

Comment:   Michael Jordan, a miner, and his wife Ellen were living at 23 Back South Railway Street in 1871. At that time there was only one colliery in Seaham, find photographs under COLLIERIES/Seaham Colliery. There were two major underground disasters at this colliery while Michael worked there in 1871 and 1880, with a combined loss of life of 190.
By 1881 the family were living at 22 South Railway St., unfortunately I do not have a photograph of the front of the house, but in SEAHAM STREETS/Central Area Index 1928, the house at the bottom of the shot with the red 46 on its roof is built in the yard of number 22 S R St. I have no idea where number 23 Back South Railway Street (Irish Back Street) is but would expect it to be in the vicinity of 22 S R St and even, possibly, the house in the yard which is shown in close up at STREETS/Various Streets/ ST 001.
There are various histories on site describing the conditions at Seaham Colliery and Seaham housing in the mid/late 1800s, also under RAILWAYS, RY 003 shows the eastern end of North and South Railway Streets in 1870 and RY 057 shows what would have been the view from the front door of No 22 South Railway St.
By 1891 the family were living in 2 rooms at 11 Morgan Street (High) Southwick, there are photographs under Town List/Sunderland/Southwick. Norman Kirtlan can possibly supply you with photographs of the street, contact him at oldsunderland@yahoo.co.uk
Get back to me if you have any queries.

mymaternal g-g grandfather was Parkin Thornton, he was a stonemason and lived in seaham most of his life but that is all the info i have, I would love to know if there are any buildings he may have worked on or any further info. thank you/
31 /January /2012----19 :09 :04 - west bromwich west mid;s

Comment:   Three men by the name of Parkin Thornton lived in Seaham in the 1800s, all related as you might suspect.
The first PT, born 1806, arrived in Seaham from Sunderland with his wife Jane and 2 children sometime between 1831 and 1834. By 1834 he appears listed as a mason and victualler as landlord of the Mason's Arms at 27 South Railway Street. He may well have built the pub and the housing (Thornton's Buildings) to the rear which faced onto Back South Railway St (Irish Back Street)
He lived on the premises (with 10 children by 1847) until 1861 when he sold the pub to a Robert Scott who re-named it The Northumberland Arms, he then moved to 34 Back Henry Street, far from the best housing in town.
In 1861/2 he is listed as a beer retailer at 32 North Railway Street a beer house which eventually became the Bridge Vaults.
In 1864 a Parkin Thornton appears living at Marlborough Street (best housing in town) as a stonemason and builder, this would be his son of the same name born in 1832.
In 1865 a PT is listed as a beer retailer in Frances Street, this is probably PT senior, in the last entry I find for PT senior he is living as a widower above a shop at 32 Church Street in 1881.
1865 finds PT Junior (builder) still at Marlborough St (next door to my g/grandfather and gg/grandmother), in 1873 he is at Vane Terrace (stonemason), in 1879 Adelaide Row (stonemason) and lastly 1889/90 a fruiterer at 25 North Railway Street.
In 1881 PT junior was living with one of his daughters at a shared house, 4 Caroline St.
In 1871, the third Parkin Thornton was born, he was the son of Robert T, a joiner of 21 Adolphus St. and grandson of PT senior, he does not appear in my Trade Directories.
During the 50+ year period when PT senior and his son were builders in Seaham, the town including New Seaham increased in size massively with over 80 streets being built, it was boom time also for public houses. Both men seem to have been prominent businessmen but judging by their later addresses neither appear to have finished up particularly well off though I may be wrong.
Photographs of all of the streets mentioned above and some of the actual buildings can be seen on site and PT can be found on MAPS/OLD 1858 Named Buildings in Railway Street.
Get back to me if you need any more info or help in finding relevant photographs

Heather (and Lily), how much do you already know? Assuming he was born in Sunderland, as Lily said, there is a birth registration in December quarter 1883 for William Thomas Oates (note the order of the forenames). In 1891 there is a William T Oates, age 7, parents Thomas, a blacksmith, and Elizabeth, living in Dipton. Lanchester. In 1901 William and siblings are living with their married sister Mary and her husband William Ventriss in South Shields. In 1911 what may be the same person, but now Thomas Oates, is still single, a shipyard labourer, living in Tynemouth. He is head of the household, and with him are the widow Mary Cully and her children.
Apologies if you have already got this information.

Just read through old posts and noticed my cousin Lily who lives in Edinburgh has already tried looking for Thomas William Oates with no luck. He is a real mystery man. Sorry for previous post - should have read first.

Comment:   Heather, looks like your grandfather was born in Sunderland 1877. In 1911 he was a platelayer for NE Railways living in 2 rooms at 4 South Terrace,Seaham with his wife Lily (24) and two children.
He married in 1908 (not at Seaham), his children were both christened at St John's Ch, Seaham, Lily on 13 Jan 1909 and Ada on 17th Aug 1910.
Mother and both children were born in Seaham.
Sorry to have taken so long to get around to this.

Searching for: Scott and Burrell Families in Seaham/ Eastington.

Scott Family:
I am looking for information regarding the family of Margaret Scott Musther (~1894 - 1976). Nothing is known of her father and it is thought her mother died when she was very young, she was raised in Seaham Habour by her Uncle, John Scott, who was an architect. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Burrell Family:
I am looking for information regarding the family of Walter Burrell (1894-1964). He or his family were from either Seaham or Eastington, and he was one of 17 children. It was joked that each of the 17 only had one child each, so there may not be as many descendants as expected, any information would be greatly appreciated!

I am happy to help other searchers if I can.

Comment:   Lucy, in 1911 Margaret Scott Musther aged 14 was living with her uncle John Bowey Scott, a solicitor and his sisters Mary Jane and Margaret at 1 Brookside Villas, Dene House Road, Seaham.
I can't find Margaret as Musther in 1901 but find Margaret Scott MUSTARD aged 4 living with her parents William Mustard (34)a waterworks gardener born Seaham and Isabella (33) b Newcastle. This is almost certainly your family.
Also Margaret Scott Musther married William Burrell of Ryhope at St Mary Magdalene's Ch, Seaham on 15/6/1922.
These dates may help your research.... A William Musther was born in Seaham to William and Mary Ann in 1845 and another of the same name died in Seaham aged 64 in 1888.
Have fun

Peter Bamburgh
I remember as a young child during the war being taken by my grandmother, Kate Blackett to see a friend or relative a Mrs Hunter who's daughter I believe was called Jenny Bamburgh was there. There were children there younger than I was and the oldest was Alma. I think there father was serving in the RAF.
