Sorry Lynn I've no recollection of the Holland or Cummings families in Seaham.
Yes I am on the school photo , 3rd from left back row.My name was Jean Coupland and I lived in the next street to Barbara.I don,t suppose Barbara will remember me but I think Joan will. I used to see her sometimes when I visited my parents.
Please pass on my best wishes and congratulations to Barbara

I have only been looking at this excellent site for a day, and have already had a "hit".
David Atkinson the publisher of Atkinsons Monthly Record, was married to Margaret Reed, my Great Grand Aunt.
David died in the Cher department of central France in 1878. Margaret his wife in the same area, 1907.

I've just ploughed through 2,234 records on Ancestry.co.uk from the 1911 census for Seaham. Found 2 grandparents and a grand uncle, Heppells and Tizards.
The Dawdon records appear to run to well over 6,000 records!!!
Great place to look for your family history.

message for J. Hodgson. Thanks for your info. I had found A. Joan on the school photo. Are you on it?
All the info you sent me is correct. My mum is still alive but my dad died years ago. Two of his sisters Ada and Joan are still in Seaham and lambton is in Hawthorn.
I don't know if you would know if any of the Holland family still have relatives in Seaham?John Thomas and Sarah Ann Holland had 8 daughters and 1 son called John T. Their eldest daughter Catherine married Thomas William Cummings. The Cummings owned the house in Princess Street. Their daughter Ada married joseph Brown and they ended up living back at princess St. after their grocery business in Dillon St went bust during the depression.i would love to find out more about the Cummings. None of my family have much info about them.
A. barbara is about to celebrate her golden wedding. If you give me your name I'll ask if she remembers you?! Many thanks Lynn Thompson

For anyone interested in the history of Seaham Harbour: thought you might be interested to know that reprints of the 1895 Ordnance Survey map of Seaham Harbour are now available from alangodfreymaps.co.uk. This is the first time they have reprinted this map since 1984 - and it's fascinating to compare with the Seaham Harbour we all love today.
Finally, a very very big thank you to Dave and everyone who keeps this site going.

When our family lived in North Battery, father (Charlie) was sent a monkey by my sister in Torquay. He was named "Benito" after Mussilini. My dad used to be asked to all the fetes and shows. Benito was exceptionally friendly and was a treaure around the house, only going into his caged outhouse at night.
I would appreciate any memories that anyone has of seeing the monkey and especially any photos of him.
Sadly, when the searchlight company set up outside the house Benito was tormented with lighted cigarettes by some soldiers. He was sent to a new home where there was no khaki to be seen.

Does anyone have any information regarding this g/man .
He was my grandfather and ran the Foresters Arms 10 North Railway Street Seaham Harbour .
The time period would be around 1900 1905 roughly ' he and his wife Elizabeth ran the pub and one of my uncles was born there a Francis Holdridge Brown .
Any feedback would be a bonus . I do have a couple of photo's of an interior of a pub which i think may have been The Foresters Arms .
10 /May /2011----11 :31 :59 - Watford Hertfordshire England

Comment:   I can find a man who appears to be your grandfather living at 19 Hedworth St, Sunderland in 1901 but no mention of him in the trade directories I have of Seaham.
In 1899/1900 no landlord is named for the Forester's Arms, only the owners James Deuchar Ltd.
In 1902 the landlord was Alfred Dobson and in 1910 William Hardy.
Unfortunately I have no directories for the years between 1902 and 1910.
I have made a note of your interest and will contact you if any information comes to light.
If you could scan and email copies of the pub interior photographs it would be much appreciated.
Dave

From what I remember of my older drothers and Dad, Picture EN24 was actually painted on the wall in the Golden Lion
6 /April /2011----18 :14 :25 - Sale Cheshire

Comment:   Stan, there were three large oil paintings in the back room of the Golden Lion, all in heavy, 6 inch wide, ornate gilt frames.
There was the one shown on site looking north from the Bath Terrace area, one looking south of an unspoiled Blast Beach and one of the docks from the sea with a rowing boat in the foreground. This boat could have been a fishing cobble, pilot boat or just possibly Seaham's first lifeboat, Friend of All Nations.
All three paintings were possibly moved to the Theatre Royal for storage but have since disappeared.
Does anyone know where they are now?
I am sure I have a very bad photograph of the dock painting somewhere, if I can find it I will put it in the Engravings section this weekend.

I used to visit Adam & Eve's garden with my grandmother in the 1960's. I went there a few months ago to remember her (her ashes were scattered there). I wondered if anyone recalls Thomas Hall who ran the pub down there (and the Castlereagh Hotel) around 1914, he was my great-grandfather. Other family names I'm interested in are Thomas William Cummings,William Lambton Brown, Mary Ann Davison and John Thomas Holland. I think all these families belong to Seaham.

Hello Brian,
Many thanks for your interest.
My father's family are the Brown's who have lived in Seaham for 3 generations through one side of the family or the other. I put off starting to research them because of the difficulty of the name. However my father is dead and the rest of his brothers and sisters are following him so I thought I'd better make a start while there was still someone to ask. I had found the basic info on Ancestry about Henry but can't find his service records, maybe they are lost. My next search would have been the war graves, but you have given me that info. Many thanks!
According to the family bible Henry was born on the 22nd Nov. 1885. His parents were William Lambton Brown and Margery Liddell.
My uncle in Seaham understands they are all Durham born and on the 1891 census they are living in Kelloe and it shows that the children Jane, John William, Henry and Margaret were all born in Trimdon Grange. I've certainly not heard about a Yorkshire connection.

Hello,
I am Charlotte - 13 from County Durham - and I have been doing my Family tree. The vast majority of my family come from The Seaham Area. The surnames of some of these people are:
Ehrhardt or Earhart, Donaldson, Davidson and Gibson.
The Gibson family had a lot to do with Seaham. John Gibson was the Grand Master of Fawcett Lodge, and him and his family ran two local pubs - at different times - The New Seaham Inn, and The Northumberland Arms. If anyone has any pictures of more info, stories etc, I would be so greatful!
Donaldson:
They all came from Seaham! My Great Gran - who is now 93 - has lived in Seaham all her life. She was the next door neighbour of the Pecito Family. Frank and his wife were Italian, and spoke verly little English. They wrote none. So, My Gran (Muriel Ehrhardt nee Donaldson) used to do his accounts for him. There is a very funny story where they bake my Gran an ice cream cake - as Frank was an Ice Cream man! But, my Gran only realizad it was made out of ice cream when it was nearly all melted!
If you have ANY Information or Pictures then I would be ever so thankful.
PS - I would really love to see pics of the pubs maybe in the 1930's?
Thanks,
Charlotte

Hi Dave and the team.
I've been explaining to the family how great the site is and the great help you have been. It started all sorts of discussions, the main topic being Hallowell Weetman the Master Mariner. We have a couple of stories all based around him losing One of a fleet of either 2 or 3 ships he owned. One tail says he had 2 and sold the other to compensate the families of the lost seaman and then he committed suicide as he couldn’t get over it. The other tail is that he had three ships sold one to compensate the families then was lost at sea himself in the other ship.
Could anyone shed any light on either of these stories or point me in the direction of where I may find out the answer. Also any names of the ships and what they were used for.
You’ve been such a help so far I like to thank you again. Plus if there are any weetman or mavins out there that would like the info I’ve got (not a great deal) they are welcome.
Thanks from someone who is very proud of his roots

George Thomas joined up in 1915 in the Yorkshire Regiment. He was taken prisoner in 1918 and taken to Germany. He died on the 11th of November, 1918, Armistice Day.
His siblings were, Elizabeth Ann, Sarah Jane, Mary Alice, Isabella, Dorothy, Anne Ethel, Robert (who served 24 years as assistant motor mechanic and 5 years as a member of the crew of the Seaham lifeboat), Ellen Gertrude, Emily, Ivy Florence, Isabella and William .
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated as I have been trying for years to get a picture of the lad.
Regards, William Kirby.

John, yes it is possible that it is the same Richard Weetman. I have not researched that branch of the family. Researching more immediate family has proved fascinating but very time consuming!
Good luck with your research.

Hi Jenny thanks for your reply
I have a Richard Weetman on one of my branches dates Birth 19th March 1890 in Seaham Harbour , died 1972 in Sunderland. Could this be your uncles father?
If so i'm quite willing to pass on the tree info I have.

I'm loving this site it's nice to know there are people out there willing to help.

John, this may or may not be relevant to your search as it is much more recent but Haliwell Weetman married my mam's sister Jennie Armstrong in the early 1950's. My uncle was better known as Ali and worked at Vane tempest pit as chief engineer. Uncle Ali's father was Richard Weetman, better known as Dick, and was married to Lizzie.
Uncle Ali and auntie Jennie had no family of their own but i believe Uncle Ali had one sister.
Hope this information helps.

Hi Dave
thanks for your answer to my previous request for help. I have a photo of Halliwell Weetman in his sailing cloths next to a large anchor. There is a story that my nan told me, when she was still with us, that Halliwell own 2 boats and one was lost at sea so he sold the other, even though he didn't have to, to compensate the fisherman's families who lost their lives.
As I said I'm new at this family tree stuff feeling that if I don't do it our history will be lost.
You say in your answer that trade directories tell you about HW can anyone get access to these. It would be great to get a photocopy of the entries relevant to my family.
Did you manage to find any reference to MAVIN,? I've notes that say John Mavin lived in New Cottages with wife Eliza. it's their daughter who Will Weetman married.

I just can't say how thankful I am for your help i've felt i've been hitting a brick wall.

thanks

Comment:   John, probably nothing to do with your family but in 1851 an Ann Maving aged 19 born Gateshead was a servant to John Brough, miller and brewer at Seaham Park Mill.
More relevant, in 1861 Richard Shawcroft and his wife Mary Ann were living at 83 New Cottages with stepdaughter Elizabeth Ann Mavin aged 15 born Monkwearmouth and John Mavin, stepson aged 13 a coalminer ditto.
In 1871 it looks like Mary Ann is a widow living with her daughter, son in law John Whitfield and their daughter Mary A 6 months..
I can't see John Mavin in 1871 but by 1881 he is an engine driver aged 32 living at 40 New Cottages with his wife Elizabeth and children, Elizabeth A 11, William 7, Thomas J 4 and Elizabeth J 1 year.

Hi I've just started to compile info on my family history and found your site when i searched for Seaham. I though great but I've not been able to find any reference to my family the "WEETMANS" according to my records I had approximately 20+ relatives either born or residing in Seaham in the 1800's. one address i have is William Street. I've looked for photos. The other address is swinesbank.
Any help or confirmation of the info I already have would be great. plus do you know where i could possibly get a map of the streets from that period of time.
My great grand father William Weetman (married Elizabeth Anne Mavin - hence my middle name) is suposed to have lived in a tide cottage of the Londonderrys and had to move out to The Parade in Sunderland when Londonderry sold out to the London North Eastern Company.
Any help would be appreciated on the Weetmans and if possible the Mavins.
Thanks in advance John Mavin Tyas

Comment:   John, the trade directories show Halliwell Weetman, a Master Mariner, living at William Street in 1856 and 1858. By 1873 he is listed as a ship-owner living in Frances Street.
The only William W I can find was the son of Hallowell (sic) and Ellen (Eleonor) Weetman.
In 1871, William aged 5, was living with his mother and 7 brothers and sisters at 35 Frances St (surname misspelt as Wheatman). His father was not resident, probably at sea.
By 1881, the family were living at 27 New Cottages (later renamed Swinebank Cottages).
In 1891, William aged 25, a loco stoker, is living at 13 Maria St, still with his parents. Maria St is not easy to find, it is a "cross" street running through Frances, Adolphus, Viceroy and Frederick streets
You can find a brilliant description of Swinebank Cottages under SEAHAM/HISTORY/AUTOBIOGRAPHIES/Up the Ladder.
Photographs of William Street can be found at SEAHAM/STREETS/Central Area, also Central Area Index shows the street in context and Model of Seaham 1864 gives you a great 3D view of the street and town.
You should find all the maps you need under SEAHAM/MAPS/Old

re Holleys and Heppels. I've just [belatedly] noticed some posts re the Holleys and Heppels. George Chalfont Holley was my grandmother's uncle. Her mum was his sister Margaret. She talked with great affection about George. A very gentle gentleman by all accounts. She also mentioned the Hepples but we could never work out who they were until now. We used to take her stories with a pinch of salt until we realised that we really were related to an England striker. [George Holley.] Unfortunately we're all Newcastle United fans so the fact he played for Sunderland is something we don't like to talk about. Any info re Holley's and Chalfonts would be gratefully received. I have a little about the Chalfonts. They hailed from Marylebone and before that Eling in Hants.
