Did you get the photos I sent last year? I've just found details I think I forgot to put with them . I sent photos of a production of Twelfth Night by Seaham Girls Grammar School also some photos of theCollie Family.Thomas belonged Dawdon and married Ethel in 1931 at St. Hild and St. Helen's.Thomas was in RAF. Ethel was in the Fire service during the war --- in her uniform with her brother Ernest who was a navigator on Wellington bombers Thought perhaps someone in Seaham might remember them.Keep up the good work. Hello Folks,
I came across a silverware set with a card inside that says;

Seaham Harbour Horticultural Society
SPORTS,
August Bank Holiday. 1910
FIRST PRIZE,
One Mile Bike Race.

Would first prize be a 12 place service set.
Regardless, the card is no doubt From Seaham Harbour.
Can anyone give me any information on this find.
Thank you.

My wife's great, great grandfather was Bolko Schmiechen who had a photographers shop at 135 High Street. He handed it over to his son also Bolko prior to being the manager of the Star Garter Hotel, 21 Cumberland Road in 1911 census.
Regretfully photos of the shop were destroyed when my mother in law got rid of them before we had chance to keep them.
Having looked at your High St photos I cannot see the shop and wondered if you knew where it was?
23 /December /2010----18 :30 :28 - Maidstone Kent

Comment:   Mick, I have no photographs of the shop in High St West, suggest you get in touch with Norman Kirtlan at oldsunderland@yahoo.co.uk , he may be able to help or put you in touch with someone who can.
Did you know that Bolko senior also had a shop at 38 Tower St, W Hartlepool from 1884-1898/9. Looks like he also traded from 22 Tower St at some time.

Message 265 - Brynn Gilmore | brynng~AT~ntlworld~DOT~com
I'm looking for any information relating to my father SIDNEY GILMORE. He was born 1915, his father had a butchers shop in seaham harbour. Any information would be gratefully received.
Thanks
14 /December /2010----10 :08 :25 - Bedfordshire

Comment:   Brynn, the first Gilmore trading in Seaham was John Todd Gilmore, landlord of the Vane Arms in 1859.
By 1889 George Frederick Gilmore was trading as a butcher from 4 Green St and by 1899/1900 from 14 Church St. He was followed at this address by Sarah Gilmore in 1910 and Sidney Gilmore in 1921. Sidney also had a shop in Emily Street (1929) and Fox Street Dawdon (1934).
Noel Gilmore traded from Fox St until probably the 1970s when he became a newsagent on Station Road.
If you can let me have the names of your grandparents and any other info you may have, I'll check this out properly for you.

Message 264 - DM Swinbank | sevenswinbank~AT~hotmail~DOT~com
Hello all,
I am enjoying the site. While browsing, I came upon a reference to the Swinebank cottages.
Since my last name is similar, I wonder if there would be any connection to our family. I suspect the two last names are completely separate, but thought I'd ask anyway.
Yes, I do have ancestors from Seaham.
Thanks!
13 /December /2010----23 :26 :28 - Chicago, Illinois, USA

Comment:   I have always assumed that Swine Bank Lodge and cottages were so named because the land had previously been used for raising pigs.
I can find no Swinbank in Seaham in the census reports to 1891 or the trade directories to 1938.
Sorry....worth a try.

What a wonderful interview with Mr. George Cole. It was a treasure to read about his account in the mines and life in Seaham. My great grandfather and I believe my grandfather worked in the mines. My grandfather left Seaham in the 1930's. I never knew either of them so it is nice to read an account of what life was like. Looking forward to reading the future interviews.

Anyone having the same Problem check to see if this version of Explorer has been installed onto your computer and then delete as I did. It then reverts back to IE8

Hi Dave

Thank you very much for your reply.
My grandfather , Thomas William Oates, was born in Sunderland, but at the time of his marriage in 1908, was living in Seaham Harbour at 4 Frederick Street. In 1911 he and my gran, Lily Nicholson, were living at 4 South Terrace in Seaham Harbour.
Would there be any way of finding out who owend these properties at the time?
Regards Lily
10 /October /2010----19 :26 :37 - Edinburgh Scotland

Comment:   Lily, I can find nothing for 4 Frederick Street but 4 South Tce was a shop so your gran would have lived in the upstairs flat. From 1910 until 1938 the shop was run by a hairdresser, Patrick Joseph McDonough who may have owned the property.

Comment:   Hello Maureen, the Seaham aerial photograph belongs to Rob Hunter who allows me to use his photographs on site. You can contact him at www.northeastenglandfromtheair.co.uk . He is very reasonable, he also has a book of around 25 aerial shots of Seaham for only £5.
Re the Cassop photograph, I have searched my drives and cannot find a large file of this shot. I may or may not have one but will keep looking.

19 /September /2010----08 :35 :12 - Edinburgh

Comment:   Lily, I can't help with your Sunderland relations but Lily Nicholson was born at 3 New Cottages (Swinebank Cottages), her parents were living at this address in 1881 and 1891.
In 1861 and 1871 Lily's father lived at 1 William Street.
You can find photographs of William St in SEAHAM/Streets/Central Area. In the HISTORY section have a look at "Up the Ladder" a brilliant description of life in Swinebank Cottages around the time your grandmother lived there.

Mackenzies during 1850s.
Hi
ONe of my ancestors, Andrew Mackenzie was born in Seaham in 1851 to Andrew and Isabella Mackenzie. The older Andrew was a master mariner an I wonder if he was the captain of a coal boat at the time? If anyone is into this aspect of Seaham history and has any intelligence, I would love to hear from you.
27 /August /2010----13 :48 :38 - Cornwall

Comment:   Jan, sorry I can't help with your query re Andrew senior.
I am sure that you will know that Andrew junior was born at William Street (there are photographs of this street in SEAHAM/STREETS/CENTRAL AREA) and that Isabella was a widow by 1861 and was listed as a bonnet maker living and possibly working from 14 Adelaide Row.
What you may not know is that in 1865 and possibly as late as 1870, Isabella was trading as a milliner, dressmaker, bonnet maker and toy dealer from premises in Church Street.

Hello Jamie. I saw your message on the guestbook and was interested what you had to say about the Seaham Cole's. What I have is William Simpson Cole who married Sarah Hudson from Seaham Harbour in 1895. His father was called George Cole. On the 1911 census William and Sarah Jane are living at Tempest Street, Silksworth. The children were ,Hannah, Evelyn, Ann, and robert. Two further children followed with twins Frederick and Harold born in 1918. Harold was in the Navy in the 2nd World War and was killed when the destroyer he was on, H.M.S. Dainty, was sunk in Tobruk Harbour in an air attack. A long shot I know but one never knows. Regards, William Kirby.

I am researching the Leighton Family from Monkwearmouth/Bishopswearmouth Area who were mainly seamen and to a great extent Master Mariners. This family tended to use Mothers maiden names as second given names, and for long periods. For Instance Joseph Nicholson, John McDougle, Ralph Orren, Richard Maltby. Their activities stretch all around the coast of England from Warkworth in Northumberland to Liverpool and Edinburgh. I have gone back to Robert Leighton (b) 1734/5 (m) Ann Ainsley 29/10/1763

Dear anyone,

i have been researching the Cole family tree(Seaham branch) for a few years now & have information back to 1800 in Cornwall via Ayrshire. I know that most (not all) of the Coles in Seaham were descended from 3/4 brothers who arrived in Seaham @ 1885. Unfortunately i only have my particular branch.

If any other members of the Cole family want any help with their family tree, I can help with anybody born before 1911. All you need to do is find your way back to there & if you link in with 1 of the members I have got(probably be a Grand or G Grandparent), the rest is done for you, I am happy to share.

Dear Sirs,

This website has been recommended to me in my efforts to identify one of the victims of the Seaham Colliery Disaster, Sept 1880. I have a Great X 3 uncle, John Wilkinson who would have been about 20 at the time of the disaster. There has been some confusion as there appears to be two John Wilkinson's from Seaham/Seaham Colliery born c. 1860 and I want to know if in your records there is any information on him. His father and mother were Jonathan (or John) and Jane and amongst his sibblings were Lancelot, Ellen, John (different one - 8 years older), Henry and my direct descendent William.

If you could point me in the right direction of my research, it would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Chris

Great site to help the granchildren understand our living conditions before we left for Australia.
The photographs add to the memory of our younger days in Herrington and Hendon as school children.
Keep up the great work.

Comment:   Thanks John, your family would enjoy reading "Seaham Newspaper 1857" in the history section, in it you will find letters back home from a group of Seaham lads who emigrated to Australia in that year.

If Richard Thorpe reads this, we have a query in the Site that you may be able answer for us. I know that your Mom worked in Gallons Shop and I do believe she was there until it closed. The question is what year did it close I seem to think it was about 1968

I am related to that family and I wondered if any of the people in the photograph are members of the family.I havnt ever seen this shop before and it means so much to me to see it.. Thank you so much Regards from Ann Hansen

For Dave Angus - thank you so much for that information about William Watson as it really does help. I never realised that Ellen Watson had a pawn shop or that William Watson had been a shipowner. The William Watson at 48 Church Street with wife, Sarah, and six children is, in fact, my 3 x great grandfather's eldest son who was also a pilot as on the same census 1861, William senior is living at 10 Bank Street, Sunderland with wife Ruth and children, Ellen and Thomas. On the 1851 census, William senior has already moved to Sunderland and is listed as a pilot living with wife, Ruth, and daughters Ruth (my g.g. grandmother) and Ellen. Although all the census returns give the young Ruth Watson's birthplace as Sunderland, her birth certificate states that she was born 17th November, 1837 at Seaham Harbour where her father, William Watson, is a pilot and the informant is Henry Smith, Surgeon of Seaham Harbour. The William Watson at Church Street is still a relative so thank you very much for that valuable information!
Kind regards, Joan Britton
