Message for Ben Hodges. If you can give me a bit more info on Bev Mc Dougall, I will put a letter in the womans Magazines for you. I live on the Gold Coast which is about 3000 miles away from Perth but maybe I can help find her for you. I could only find a N Mc Dougall but not knowing where abouts she lives, its difficult. I will also try and find out what I can about the newspapers in Perth. I have found quite a few people through the womens magazines as most women like to read the Lost Family section. Maybe even someone who knows her might see a letter asking for her. Just let me know if you would like me to try for you.My Parents used to live in Church st and then moved to Corcyra St, many years ago. I still have friends in Seaham.

Looking at your photo on "Please read this" of the British Legion Club of 1931, I'm pretty certain my grandfather is seated 5th from the left next to the chap with the white smock. He was George Guy, who would have been 53 at the time (died in 1959 in Ryhope General). George was a coal inspector at Dawdon, and lived at 6 Edith Street. He was also at one time the Conservative agent I believe - a somewhat fruitless task I i'm sure! I still have various letters and notes from Lord Londonderry and others.

His daughter, my Mum, was Winnie Guy, later Winnie Bell. I'm sure there'll still be people alive who'd remember her. She drove ambulances in the war, and was a keen member of the Dawdon Swimming Club. George lived with us in Victoria Street, next to Mrs and Miss Bainbridge I remember, until his death in 1959. For anyone who remembers Winnie or my Dad, Dick Bell, she died in 1994, and my Dad just 3 or 4 years ago.

I had a very enjoyable visit to your site several times today.

My grandmother married a second time when I was about 11 (46 years ago!) to an ex miner in Seaham and she moved to Stewart Street. As a child we visited her and I was always fascinated by her collection of tinned food stored under the bed (for hard times), a habit she had acquired during the wars!

Well done - your efforts in keeping local history alive is to be commended.

Re 'Rubens Premises'
Thank you so much Dave for your helpful reply. I looked at the photographs, and as a result looked at the building on Google Street View too. It is great to track down another Gibbs and Canning Building. I don't know if the folks of Seaham know that this building has bits made by the same firm that made the Natural History Museum in London (inside and out.) I can see I'll have to have a holiday that brings me in this direction so I can come and see it.
Best Wishes,
Angella

would welcome any information on Miss Jessie Hanley please
Im trying to trace my fathers side of my family, Alexander Wallace was born to Sam &. Elizabeth Wallace ( nee Hanley ) in Easington in 1920, they later moved to Barnsley in Yorkshire ,as a small girl in the 1950s I was a regular visitor to Horden to Vist my grandmothers side of the family. I believe Jessie Hanley was a niece of my grandma although I don't think they had any contact due to a family rift. My grandfathers brother had a small holding which he sold and later a school in Peterlee was built called 8 Acre Infant school(. Least ways that's the story which was all ways told to me ) the brother then emigrated to U.S.A. W ould be very grateful to ant information how ever small it would be

In the process of researching a local terracotta factory I have come across a reference to 'Rubens Premises' built in 1930. Can anybody help me with details about what this building might have been? I did read something about a building in church Street, but can't see anything on Google Street View.

Comment:   Angella, Ruben's Arcade was at the junction of Church Street and Blandford Place with an entrance in both streets.
Opened 1930 it closed I guess in the early seventies.
There are a couple of photographs on site which show the arcade, CHURCH ST 039 and VARIOUS STREETS ST 074

Hi Ann, Re the photo of my parents wedding day. We do not have this photo at all. We only have 2 photos of that special day, one of them together outside the church and the other one with my grandparents. When Ian visited my parents mam gave him all the photos with your mam on as he had none of your mam at all. I remember Aunty Sarah and Aunty Bessie (your mam) were bridesmaids and I remember seeing photos of them when I was young. If possible I would love to see any you have. Margaret and I both live just north of Newcastle and see each other every week. love Jean.

A Message to our guestbook users.

For those people that are requesting family information it would be a lot better to register on the forum, that way the team at East -Durham can reply direct to a posting.
The guest book is as its name implies a guestbook.

Please have a look at the forum family section as its much better than the guestbook for that type of enquiry.

Keith

I have three Halliday Scott's on my family tree. They are all descended from George Scott (b.1806) and Elizabeth Halliday. George Scott is my 3 x great grandfather. His son George Scott (1875-1935) is my 2 x great grandfather. His picture is shown on this website as he was a lifeboat man and a sea pilot in Seaham Harbour.

I wanted to see this site because I'm doing our genealogy and my 11th grandfather was born in Wapping in 1525, and died feb. 16,1582 in Seaham Harbor. His name was Edward Dawson. He was married to Elizabeth Charlton. He is as far back as I can go so far so I at least wanted to see where he was born. I truly appreciate sites like this. Thank you so much.

I have been researching the Hood Family Tree & my GG Grandfather William Hood born around 1833/4 married a Mary Ann Scott born Houghton Le Spring 1831/2, I can remember in the 1930s a cousin of my grandfather Robert, visiting us & his name was Halliday Scott ( could be after his mothers maiden name) Maybe some connection there, as Halliday for a christian name very unusual. Will look further into it.Mary Ann died 1904 age 73.

I am researching my family and know that I have ancestors named Scott in Seaham. My great, great grandfather was George Scott b.1839-1914. He was a Dock Pilot and a lifeboatman. He was married to Deborah Stonehouse. They were both born in Seaham. I have the census records and birth and marriage records.
He had a son George Scott b.1864 who was a waggonway man in the colliery.
His father was also George Scott 1806-1859 and a Pilot in Seaham, born in Sunderland and married to Elizabeth Halliday.

I am trying to identify him from the photos on this site but there are several George Scott's. Can you help identify him please?

Hi Dave

That is because John William Williams is buried in Seaham, in Princess Road Cemetery. Only Thomas and Edward are mentioned in Horden, and Thomas is the only one of them buried at Horden. Edward is buried in the Combles Communal Cemetery Extension.

I have a newspaper cutting (unfortunately I don't know which paper), that shows all six brothers fighting for the King from Horden. It also shows their parents but unfortunately the print is so small I can't read who they are, but I'm pretty sure they are Matthew and Ann Williams and 6 of their sons. How would I go about sending you a copy.

I have a query from a lady in Denmark, can you help?
A few weeks before D-Day in 1944 a regiment (possibly Scottish) passed through Seaton village, staying 2 or 3 nights camped on the village green, before moving south for D-Day. They arrived by truck and the senior officers were billeted in Seaton Hall. We seem to have lost any information that we had and would be interested to know which Regiment this might have been, and what was it's ultimate fate.
